Fostering locally-led change through strategic planning
As part of the Disaster READY program, AVI supported PCDF in creating their first ever 5-Year Strategic Plan that will guide their significant work in order to better serve their communities.
Partners in Community Development Fiji (PCDF) is one of Fiji’s longest established NGOs that carries out community development projects. For over 30 years PCDF has worked in partnership with communities, donors, government and other organisations to improve the lives of people in isolated communities through projects aimed at improving environmental, social and economic outcomes. Some examples of their projects include financial literacy training, income generation skills development and grant writing workshops.
Like many highly effective community organisations, PCDF had never had the opportunity or the resources to create its own long-term strategic plan, which would enable the organisation to prioritise its own locally led strategic goals. As part of the Disaster READY program, AVI supported PCDF in creating their first ever 5-Year Strategic Plan that will guide their significant work in order to better serve their communities. AVI’s International Services team worked closely with PCDF to identify their needs and guide them through the strategic planning process.
For many staff, this was the first time they had been involved in creating a shared purpose and vision for the future. PCDF values of inclusiveness, local capacity building and promoting the interest of local isolated communities remained at the core of their strategic plan process. They focused on staff development and integrating inclusiveness and expanding their skill set and knowledge on community development models and local community development strategies.
From the process, PCDF staff were able to create their annual business plans and Individual Work Plans, aligning their own work into the strategic plan. With a clear blueprint for the future, PCDF staff were able to identify how their individual work and activities fit into the bigger picture and supported the future direction of the organisation.
PCDF continues to carry out significant community development projects and build local capacity with a shared goal and direction effectively outlined within their 5-year strategic plan.
