AVI Position Statement

Proposal for a First Nations’ Voice to Parliament

AVI fully endorses the Uluru Statement from the Heart and accepts the generous invitation to work together for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereignty and a brighter future as a nation united.

We wholeheartedly support the establishment of a First Nations’ Voice to be enshrined in the Constitution and a Makarrata Commission to lead to truth telling and treaty making. Australia is the only country in the world yet to formally recognise its Indigenous people in the form of a treaty or constitutional recognition.

It is our organisation’s belief that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to move towards true reconciliation and heal the wrongs of the past. A Voice to Parliament will provide essential practical and culturally safe advice to address the social and economic inequities faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

AVI has a long and proud history of speaking out against injustice– from opposing apartheid in South Africa to supporting Timor-Leste’s movement for independence. Today we would like to stand alongside our First Nations brothers and sisters and other allies and support this historic opportunity for change
